RMA KARATE TO NATIONALS
Five Barrie martial artists
competed at the WKC Ontario regional
qualifiers in London this past weekend
(April 17) with tremendous
success. The event was an all black
belt event however non-black belts were
permitted to compete for
their chance to advance to the nationals
next month in Ottawa.
Only the top 8 from each
separate division at the Ontario regional
qualifiers advance to the WKC Canadian
national team trials may long
weekend in our nations
capital. The 5 from RMA Karate in
Barrie had no
worries about qualifying for
the nationals in Ottawa and proudly
represented their head instructor Sensei
Craig Ridout.
Fifteen-year-old black belt
Tressa Y, a world karate champion,
competed in 10 separate divisions and
medaled
in all 10 divisions, making a
new competitor record for the most
divisions entered and medaled in.
Tressa blew
the competition away in the
13-17 year old girls category winning
gold in traditional weapons, gold in
extreme
open, gold in freestyle
forms, gold in Chinese forms, gold in
Korean forms, gold in continuous
sparring, silver in
point sparring, silver in
traditional kata, silver in musical
weapons and silver in creative weapons.
Following not far behind was
eleven-year-old brown belt Samantha M
winning in the girls 12 year and
under
category gold in freestyle
forms, silver in extreme forms, silver in
musical weapons, silver in traditional
weapons,
bronze in creative weapons,
bronze in Chinese forms and bronze in
continuous sparring. Samantha also
advances
in the point sparring and
traditional kata divisions after placing
fifth.
Fifteen-year-old blue belt
Tyler M-Z did amazingly well in the 13-17
year boys category and for his
first regional
qualifiers winning silver in
traditional weapons, silver in point
sparring, bronze in Chinese forms and 5th
in the
continuous sparring
division.
Nine-year-old Brooke Z
competed for the first time at the
regional qualifiers in the 12 years and
under girls category
winning silver in the Chinese
forms.
Twelve-year-old blue belt
Jacob G also did well for his first
time at the regional qualifiers in the 12
year & under
boys category winning
gold in Chinese forms, silver in point
sparring and silver in continuous
sparring, fourth in
traditional kata and fourth
in traditional weapons.
All five have advanced to the
national team trials and continue to
train in preparation for the upcoming
nationals.
Only the top 3at the
nationals from each separate division
secure their spot on the WKC Canadian
national karate team.
